How to Measure Your RV Mattress, Travel Trailer Mattress, or Camper Mattress the Right Way
Share
If you're an RV owner, travel trailer owner, fifth wheel owner, or weekend camper who's tried to order a mattress using "queen" or "king" as your guide, you already know the problem: RV mattresses, camper mattresses, and travel trailer mattresses almost never match standard home mattress sizes. Manufacturers cut corners — literally — to fit the space, the wheel wells, the slide-outs, and the cabinetry of your motorhome, fifth wheel, or trailer.
Here's how RV and camper owners can get it right the first time:
- Measure length, width, and depth separately. Don't assume symmetry — many RV beds, trailer beds, and camper beds are shorter on one side or have a cut corner.
- Check for a cut corner. This is extremely common in fifth wheels and front-bed travel trailers. Run your hand along all four corners of your camper mattress or RV mattress. If one is angled instead of square, note which corner and by how much.
- Measure your current RV mattress or camper mattress, not just the platform. The bed frame in your motorhome or trailer can be slightly larger or smaller than the mattress sitting on it.
- Write down the depth too. RV mattresses and camper mattresses are often thinner than home mattresses (commonly 5–8"), and ordering the wrong depth can cause storage or bedding problems in your trailer or motorhome even if length and width are perfect.
