How to Measure Your RV Bed the Right Way

How to Measure Your RV Bed the Right Way

Ordering the wrong size RV mattress is an expensive mistake.

Unlike a home mattress, you can't just flip it or squeeze it into place. In an RV, a few inches in the wrong direction means doors that won't close, storage that won't open, and a mattress that has to go back.

The good news: getting it right is simple if you measure correctly. Here's exactly how we do it at RV Mattress Canada — the same three steps we walk every customer through before manufacturing begins.

Why RV Mattress Sizes Are Different

Before you measure, it helps to understand why RV mattress sizing is its own thing.

RV beds are not the same as residential beds. An "RV Queen" is not the same as a standard Queen. Most RV queens are 60" x 75" or 60" x 80" — shorter than a standard residential queen (60" x 80"). Some RVs have odd dimensions that don't match any standard size at all.

This is why measuring your actual platform is always the right starting point — not assuming based on what your dealer told you.

Step 1: Measure the Platform, Not the Old Mattress

Your first instinct might be to measure the mattress that's already in your RV. Don't.

Old RV mattresses compress and shift over time. They may have been trimmed, folded, or replaced with a non-standard size at some point. Measuring the platform — the hard surface the mattress sits on — gives you the true dimensions of the space.

Measure length and width in inches. Write both numbers down.

Step 2: Check Your Clearances

Once you have the platform dimensions, check what's around the bed:

  • Slide-outs: Does the slide fully extend before you use the bed? Measure with it in the position you sleep in.
  • Cabinet doors and overhead storage: Will they still open and close with a 10" mattress in place?
  • Foot of the bed: Is there a wall, a door, or a cabinet that could be blocked by extra length?

Note anything that could affect fit. A mattress that's 1" too long can mean a storage door that won't latch.

Step 3: Confirm Before You Order

This is the step most people skip — and the one that prevents the most headaches.

Before your Georgian mattress goes into production, we personally review your measurements. If something looks off, we'll reach out before manufacturing begins. It takes one extra step and saves a lot of trouble.

When you order, simply include your measured dimensions in the notes, or reach out to us directly at hello@rvmattresscanada.com and we'll confirm everything before we start.
